This painting is a cathartic meditation, inspired by the last time I watched sunset at Breakwall in downtown Lahaina, before the wildfire took the town on that unforgettable Tuesday, August 8th 2023.
Painted with Hawai'ian 'Alaea red clay, harvested directly from the slopes of Haleakala on the island of Maui, this pigment is a direct experience of this place. Haleakala is revered as a very sacred volcano, and Maui endlessly offers her healing to all those who are fortunate to be with her. Her waters, soils, flowers, fruits, and people give so much to so many, year after year. This painting is a small way to give back to the people of Maui.
