This mixed media collage was the first piece of art I made after the wildfires, when I was able to get back into my studio after being displaced for almost three weeks. My son and I evacuated from our upcountry home in Kula twice, and stayed between several friend's homes. Houses burned down less than a quarter mile up the gulch, and the land surrounding the house burned continuously for over a month.
The attempted reckoning of this experience, trying to understand what we had all been through, proved completely senseless. This collage was a way for me to express the ineffable, through the catharsis of throwing paint at the paper. I safely gathered a small amount of ash from one of the upcountry Kula fires, and smudged it into the paint. The grief settled into the burl of the paper and once again, beauty is found within devastation.
