This painting is a cathartic meditation; a mandala to regulate the nervous system, soothe the spirit, and calm the mind. It is a release of tension and trauma, of fear and control, and an empowerment of grounding, stability, and trust.
It offers a root cord to anchor into a divine mission, and a removal of all the blockages that hinder the full shining of brilliant radiance. As fortification in the face of challenge, it is the rose beyond the thorns, the surrender after the fight, the sweet relief of peace, and the rewards of grace. The radiant warmth of the red clay orients to the Earth, and bestows a renewal of will to keep walking the long and winding path.
On August 8th 2023, I evacuated from my home in Kula, Hawai'i on the island of Maui. This traumatic experience required me to understand safety in the nervous system on a much deeper level, and I began somatic release therapies to mitigate the effects of the wildfires. Relearning the feelings of safety, survival, and trust opened new levels of power, passion, and joy.
Painted with Hawai'ian 'Alaea red clay, harvested directly from the slopes of Haleakala on the island of Maui, this pigment is a direct experience of this place. Haleakala is revered as a very sacred volcano, and Maui endlessly offers her healing to all those who are fortunate to be with her. Her waters, soils, flowers, fruits, and people give so much to so many, year after year. This painting is a small way to give back to Maui.
